What is a Chemical Peel?

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
In general, light-haired and fair-skinned people are the best candidates for chemical peels. It doesn’t work as effectively on patients with darker skin tones.
This skin care treatment is NOT RECOMMENDED for patients who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have certain skin conditions such as rosacea, dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis
- Have an infection or broken skin at the treatment site
- Have active herpes simplex sores at the treatment site

What can I expect after having a Chemical Peel?
All peels, whether mild, medium or deep, require some degree of after care. For best results, it is important to follow the post-treatment instructions recommended by your skin care specialist.
Superficial Peel
Healing time: 1-7 days
Additional Information:
- The treated skin may initially be red and flake
- Lotion should be applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen
- Makeup can typically be worn the day after your treatment
Medium Peel
Healing time: 7-14 days
Additional Information:
- You may experience some redness and swelling at the treatment site
- Skin must be soaked daily followed by ointment application
- You will need to take some antiviral medication
- Avoid all sun exposure until your skin is fully healed
- Makeup can be worn after 5-7 days
- Make sure to schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the healing progress
Deep Peel
Healing time: 14-21 days
Additional Information:
- After the chemical peel, the treated area will be bandaged
- Skin must be soaked 4-6 times daily followed by application of ointment
- Anti-viral medication is taken for 10-14 days
- Avoid sun exposure for 3-6 months
- Makeup may be worn after 2 weeks
- Several follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor healing
