The Difference Between Botox® and Juvéderm

Botox® and Juvéderm are effective, yet minimally-invasive treatments that diminish the signs of aging. These treatments allow clients to quickly treat trouble areas with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

Dermal fillers and injectable skin treatments have become a popular solution for women to safely and effectively smooth out signs of aging such as wrinkles and improve facial fullness. In fact, cosmetic injections have become so popular that there are now numerous choices on the market, including 30 different options in hyaluronic acid fillers that are licensed for sale in Canada.

This leaves many patients wondering, which treatment is the best? The experts at Calgary’s Perfexion Skin Care provide insight on the differences between the top two wrinkle treatments, Botox® and Juvéderm.

Botox®

  • What is it? Botox® uses a specially designed protein complex from Botulinum bacteria to relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Rather than work as a filler, Botox® works as smoother.
  • How it’s administered? Your skin specialist will mark the areas on your face or neck that are going to be treated then apply a numbing cream and make several small injections of the Botox® serum to the marked areas. The process is quick and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
  • What does it treat best? Botox® is best for wrinkles and other signs of aging that are caused by continuous muscle contraction when making facial expressions. Wrinkles of this nature include, frown lines between the eyes on the forehead and crow's feet.
  • Where it’s typically applied: Botox® is an excellent option to prevent further wrinkles from forming and smooth out areas that signs of aging. Common areas include:
    • lines across the forehead
    • furrows between the eyes
    • crow’s feet on the outside of the eyes
    • deep lines under the eyes
  • Who should avoid Botox®? Although it’s rare, it is possible to have a strong allergic reaction to Botox® so you should avoid this type of wrinkle treatment if you have severe allergies or a condition that impairs your skin’s ability to heal.

Juvéderm

  • What is it? Juvéderm contains hyaluronic acid, which is a gel-like substance that your body naturally produces to maintain your skin. As a dermal filler, Juvéderm can be used to treat a wider range of concerns, such as evening out scarring, plumping lips, and even altering nose shape.
  • How it’s administered? The application process for Juvéderm is very similar to Botox®. Your skin specialist will mark the areas on your face or neck that are going to be treated, applies a numbing cream, and injects small amounts of the serum, all within a matter of just 20 to 30 minutes.
  • What does it treat best? Juvéderm is best suited to treat facial areas that show a loss of volume and tone, such as thinned lips or sunken under-eye circles.
  • Where it’s typically applied: Juvéderm can be applied to many different areas of the face, including “parenthesis” lines on either side of the mouth, sunken cheeks, thinned lips, deep chin lines, uneven ridges on the nose bridge, and indented scars.
  • Who should avoid Juvéderm? Since Juvéderm does not use a toxin, this treatment presents slightly fewer risks. However, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or bruise easily this treatment should not be used.

The main difference between these two treatments lies in their function. In contrast to Botox®, Juvéderm is a wrinkle treatment that works as a filler, restoring volume to areas of the face to provide a plump, youthful look.

  • To smooth or soften an area, you should consider Botox®.
  • To plump or shape an area, Juvéderm is a more suitable treatment.
